About the League

The Washington DC Gay Basketball Association, founded and initiated by the DC Sentinels (aka TeamDCBasketball), is Washington DC’s first official gay basketball league. We maintain an athletic environment free of discrimination for members and friends of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. The league promotes positive values in our community and seeks to provide a safe space for competitive and recreational basketball competition.

The DC Sentinels roots date back to 1984. Doug Jeffries (Results Gym) was the first sponsor to support GLBT basketball in Washington DC. From 1984 to 2006, several supportive players in the Washington DC area made sure that open gyms for the LGBT community remained active. In 2007, the Sentinels reorganized with an official mission statement to work with the LGBT community and provide a safe space for LGBT basketball players to play basketball and meet other players in the Washington DC area. Since 2007, the Sentinels have won several NGBA championships in all three competitive divisions. In addition, the Sentinels won the Bronze medal in the 2010 Gay Gaymes in Cologne, Germany.

In 2013, the Sentinel board and membership expanded to create Washington DC’s first LGBT basketball league.
