General Captain Qualities and Responsibilites

Captains attendance at the Team Draft is mandatory.  You cannot be a captain if you cannot attend the Team Draft.

Perhaps nowhere is the importance of good leadership as apparent as in a sports team. A good sports team captain can lead his team to success and recognition; and can help a moderate team play better; whereas, a weak captain with poor leadership skills can hinder a team's chances of competing and bonding successfully.


Why Is A Good Sports Team Captain Important?


An analysis done by various coaches showed that although there are a variety of reasons why teams do not achieve their potential and ended their seasons early? such as injuries, conditioning, poor officiating and eligibility? there is main reason is lack of good leadership. And while leadership does come from coaches, the real leaders come from within the team itself so selecting a good team captain is vitally important.


If you want to be a captain.


Being a sports team captain isn't just about wearing the cap or being the boss or even just cheering your friends on. It requires a number of things including:

  • the desire to lead by example
  • a passionate belief in team spirit
  • the ability to handle the conflicts that invariably arise when a team is under pressure
  • the desire to put more input in planning the team's strategies
  • the ability to handle problems which may arise in a fair and expedient manner (eg. disqualifications)
  • the ability to behave professionally and responsibility despite personal feelings of frustration and anger
  • a thorough knowledge of the rules of the game
  • a desire to build relationships with other members of the team, in good times and bad
  • the ability to handle the burden of being captain while still playing in the team
  • the ability to inspire and motivate and raise team morale


Who is A Good Sports Team Captain?


Take charge.

  • Always take responsibility for your actions ? don't play the blame game. If you make a mistake or cause your team to lose out in some way, own up, face the consequences and move forward? you will be respected more than if you try to wriggle your way out with excuses.
  • Lead your team by actions, not words. Anybody can talk ? it is what they do that counts.
  • Don't put yourself above the rest of the team ? just because you have the captain title does not mean that you should have any preferential treatment. A sports team captain is subject to the same rules and consequences as the rest of the team. See yourself as one of the team, otherwise there will be a division between yourself and your team mates.
  • Recognizes your teammates? skills. The team captain studies his teammate? skills. He pays recognition on what they are capable of doing. This will give him the opportunity to familiarize their movements, and will try to adjust in order to fit in with the kind of game his teammates do
  • Utilize your teammates? abilities. After discovering his teammates? potentials, the team captain will try to organize his team wherein they can make use of their varied abilities. Let me give you some examples, if a team member is good with perimeter shooting, the team captain will ensure to pass the ball to that team member. In case of a back-court press, the team captain will ensure that the best ball handler in the court is the one dribbling the ball. These are just few examples on how t utilize the abilities of your teammate if you are the team captain
  • Ensure unselfish ball handling. The team captain understands that the game is not about him. It is all about the entire team effort.
  • There can be a time when your team cannot be able to sustain playing their game well. At these instances, it is the team captain who steps up. He puts the responsibility of scoring a basket over himself.  He serves as a model to his teammates, inspiring them to do what he does
  • As a leader of the group, the team captain ensures a harmonious working relationship within the entire team. He will be the one to help resolve issues, and relieve tensions among his teammates who are involved. A team can work as one effectively if they maintain an environment free from individual tensions.
  • The team captain takes the time to know his teammates, individually, in a personal level. This is a way for him, and his teammates, to establish rapport among them. It is undeniably pleasurable and easy to play with someone you know and trust. Trust is a very important tool to establish in a basketball team. A player can let go of that ball and pass it around if he does not trust his teammate.

In addition, continually try to be self-aware and improve your leadership skills. The best player? Responsible? Honest? Dependable? A good listener? Motivating and inspiring? Remain calm and positive under pressure?


Treat all of a problem calmly, with the entire team, address it and together try to find a solution. 


Be a good role model. Because you are a team leader, the other players on your team will look up to you for advice and guidance. Set a good example and show them the proper way to act, be it on the court, or street.


Remember, you can't be shy, you have to talk to your team as if they were your family and give advice. You should give them tips but don't boss them around, for example, "Hey Joey, move a little toward the left, its a lefty up." See how it gave instruction but didn't say, "JOEY GET OVER HERE!" A good team captain has experience, don't give tips if you don't know any. Practice a lot at whatever activity you are in.  You need to trust your teammates, just like they trust you. If you tell them what they are doing wrong or criticize them, they may get upset at you.
